FREEHAND
SYSTEMS RECEIVES PATENT APPROVAL FOR NEW ANNOTATION TECHNOLOGY
Technology
enables users to annotate music scores on the MusicPad Pro™,
the world’s first digital sheet music personal computer tablet
LOS
ALTOS, Calif. – Dec. 9, 2002 – FreeHand Systems, Inc.,
developer, manufacturer, and marketer of the MusicPad Pro™,
the world’s first digital sheet music personal computer tablet,
announced today that it has received patent approval from the U.S.
Patent and Trademark Office for technology that enables an annotation
system for performance and composition of musical scores. The annotation
application is a key component in the company’s flagship digital
sheet music display/music manager, the MusicPad Pro™.
The
MusicPad Pro is a personal computer tablet with a touch screen interface
that lets users display and annotate music. With the capacity to
store thousands of pages of music, the MusicPad Pro creates a paperless
environment -- users can download music using a Mac or PC.
The
patent, issued Nov. 19, protects a compression algorithm that enables
the user to mark up the sheet music on the screen and preserve the
original. It also covers a "look ahead" feature –
a one-half page turn – that permits the user to see parts
of two pages of music simultaneously, and includes connectivity
protocols for downloading music files.
FreeHand
Systems, Inc. is a privately held company headquartered in Los Altos,
Calif. The company is a world leader in the development, manufacture,
and marketing of electronic accessories to the music industry, as
well as a leading Internet-based provider of sheet music and digital
files. Its flagship product, the MusicPad Pro, provides innovative
technology and productivity benefits to arrangers, composers, conductors
and performers within the orchestral, choral, studio musician markets,
as well as music educators and amateur musicians. Freehand has been
